Appreciation with a Loaf of Bread Project
Moriah, Sarah, and Malachi

When we got our loaf of bread, my mom and I remembered all the times we’ve had clam chowder inside a sourdough bread bowl — we really love clam chowder. However, we have never made it at home before... after Jisun gave us a little inspiration about how easy it could be, my mom decided that’s how we’d eat our bread. Now that we are living with my grandma, a typical dinner is kind of chaotic: everyone usually has a different hunger schedule, so it’s not often that we eat dinner together.. yet, clam chowder day was different, and my mom, little brother, and I were able to eat together! The bread was a perfect combination with our clam chowder; the rest of our family got to enjoy the meal the next day!
(Side note: I cannot eat my food without some sort of spice, so I decided to add a bit of crushed red pepper flakes to my bowl to add a bit of spice!)
In having this meal together, it makes me think about how grateful we are to still have one another.
This past December, my grandfather passed away due to Covid, and he was a very special man to many. His passing was very sudden and unexpected and hit many very people, but despite that, it has brought my family closer together... my mom, brother, and I had the opportunity to move in with my grandma after our grandpa’s passing and we’ve been able to spend more time together with my extended family. There are many moments that my grandma, mom, and I share in the kitchen; learning new recipes, experimenting and trying new things: like this clam chowder! All in all, in saying this, I’m grateful that I am able to wake up everyday and give thanks to God for still allowing me and my family life, which gives us little moments like this to spend with one another and reminisce on old memories while in the process of making new memories.
